My Love Affair
I haven’t been faithful lately… to my dreams.
You see, I am a movie lover. I can watch movies all day long. I wrote an article recently: That Smells Expensive: Why I Gave Up Dining Out For 365 Days where I discussed the horrifying amount of money I spent eating out last year. I am not just trying to save money but I intend to change bad habits and become more productive toward achieving my life goals. I know I watch a lot of Netflix but I decided to take a closer look at my Netflix habits and the results were just as terrifying.
It’s not hard to get addicted to shows like Fringe, Arrow, White Collar and Psych. They provide us with laughter, suspense, drama and action. My bride and I love watching Netflix together so we often watch a TV show before bed. On weekends that we stay home and relax we even watch two or three. It hasn’t been like that forever but we’ve been doing so for a number of months. I decided to crunch some numbers and figure out how many hours of our lives Netflix has claimed.
[Average of 3.5 hours per weekday + Average of 2.5 hours per weekend] = 6 hours per week
That’s 315 hours in a year. 315 hours sitting in front of the TV watching Netflix. That number is probably low because I’m not accounting for marathons and times when I watch on my phone because I’m stuck waiting somewhere. For the sake of any dignity I have left let’s just say 320 hours. To put that into perspective that is the equivalent of working a full time job for two months.
Why Is That A Big Deal?
The reason this is a big deal to me is because there a lot of things I want to do.
- Make an awesome blog with awesome posts
- Write a book
- Read more books on my list of books to read
- Get a PhD
- Write an android app
- Start a business or full time ministry
- Write letters to my children
I know I’m not going to accomplish these things all at once and I know they won’t be done right away. That’s why the amount of time spent on Netflix is alarming. Time is precious. I write blog posts in about an hour or two. If I wrote blog posts instead of watching Netflix I would write 3-6 extra blog posts (so maybe 8 or 9 a week). Let’s assume I write 500 words in an hour. If I tried writing a book instead of watching Netflix I would have written 150,000 words in 300 hours which is the equivalent of two full size books at 75,000 words each. I could have checked off one of my life goals already. If I worked toward starting a business or full time ministry then in one year and 300 hours I could have drafted rules and bylaws, researched funding sources, held meetings, developed a more clear purpose… etc. After two or three years I might have something viable enough to quit my full time job and focus on my own business or full time ministry.
I have been wanting to write letters to my children for a very long time. I want to write letters teaching them about morality, justice, hard work, love, marriage, Catholicism and many other things. Who knows what the future holds but if it is in God’s will that I don’t live to teach them these things with my own mouth I would love for them to have letters with insight into my thoughts.
There are so many productive things I could be doing with my Netflix time. I am not saying Netflix, or watching movies, is bad but I can recognize when I’m doing way too much of something. So maybe Netflix isn’t exactly ruining my life but right now it is holding me back from a lot of other really important things. It’s preventing me from being faithful to my dreams.
So goodbye Netflix… for now.
I’ll let you know if it doesn’t work out between my dreams and I.
